Fly Fishing with John DawsonFly Fishing in Devon and Exmoor

Fly Fishing Tuition.

Fly Fishing Instruction is available to all from beginners to advanced level with single or double handed fishing rods, for individual, groups or families. The fly fishing lesson will be structured and designed according to the requirements of the individual or group.
Two or three day courses can be arranged to cover wider range of skills and methods and different venues such as lake or small water and river fishing,

Beginners Fly Fishing

Learn to Fly Fish with a qualified and licensed Game Angling coach in a safe and relaxed environment. I would advise the first lesson be at a small water fishery where there is plenty of room to learn to cast and build up the confidence. You can not fish until you have learnt to cast and get the fly into the water.
Beginners fly fishing instruction will include an introduction to the fly fishing tackle and equipment and how to assemble it, knots, casting (usually starting on grass before progressing to water and include the overhead and roll casts), fishing methods, flies, water craft and etiquette

The fly fishing lesson will include supervised fishing with the chance of hooking, playing and landing a rainbow or brown trout.

After the first lesson I usually advise beginners to return for a top up session after they have practiced and been out fishing a few times to iron out any problems and build up the skills to a higher level.

All tackle and equipment can be provided for the lesson, but bring your own if you have it. Do not purchase a rod, reel and line until you know what you need or have very good advice,
Environment Agency fishing licence can be issued for the first day of instruction at no extra cost.
Be safe and always wear a hat and eye protection (Polaroid’s are the best), you only get one pair of eyes and hooks are sharp.

Advanced Coaching

For the more advanced angler wishing to develop their skills, learn more advanced casting techniques such as the single or double haul casts, different fishing methods or to iron out existing bad habits, sessions can be arranged accordingly on your own water if desired.

Salmon Fishing Lessons

Salmon fishing instruction can include single handed, double handed casting and spinning, incorporating the single and double Spey casts, roll and snake roll casts, presentation and fishing methods.

Boat Fishing for Trout

Boat fishing lessons could include boat handling, anchoring and mooring, power boat handling, boat safety, etiquette and rules of the water. Casting from a boat is very different from casting while standing and takes a little practice.

The session will also include reading the water, setting up a drift, setting and retrieving a drogue, and fishing methods and techniques.

Cost of Tuition

Lessons can be arranged on your own water.
