Casting Lessons
There are a variety of casts that will enable you to present your fly correctly in all conditions. Mastering these will give you confidence and enable you to relax and enjoy your fishing.
Single Handed Casts
- Overhead cast. Most commonly used on still water. Needs room for the back cast.
- Single Haul Mid distance cast. Casting into a strong wind.
- Double Haul. Distance cast
- Roll cast. Used to straighten out the line, cast when there is little clear room behind to raise a sunk line before casting
- Jump Roll cast. Where there is little room behind cast in to upstream wind.
- Snap T and Z cast. Cast in to upstream wind, used where there is little back room.
- Single Spey cast. In to upstream wind.
- Double Spey cast. With downstream wind.
- Drag Free or Wiggle cast. For presentation when there are different currents in the water.
- Tension cast. Change of direction cast.
- Reach, Mend and Curved casts. Used for presenting the fly round rocks, under trees etc.
Double Handed Casts
- Overhead cast. Used to straighten the line.
- Roll cast. Used to raise a sunken line before casting.
- Single Spey cast. In to upstream wind.
- Snap T cast. In to upstream wind.
- Double Spey cast. With a downstream wind.
- Snake Roll cast. with a downstream wind, used to reposition the line.
It is a good idea for all fly casters to have a lesson occasionally to iron out bad habits and learn new techniques. Casting lessons can be arranged to suit your requirements at an appropriate venue or on your own water or field.
Cost £30 per hour or £50 for 2 hours.
